COMMENTARY Marketing is like sex -- everyone thinks they're good at it. In reality, of course, very few really get it. So few, indeed, that I had to struggle to come up with 10 companies that really know what they're doing and deliver the goods, year in, year out. Oddly, coming up with 10 companies with insanely bad marketing was far easier. Go figure.
For those that don't know, Cyfe is an affordable ($19 per month for premium, cheaper for annual billing) dashboard which enables you to create customized widgets for an all-in-one business platform. It's surprisingly easy to use and customize, and it provides social monitoring capacity, which is pretty much the other half of the keyword research equation.
customers drive the language of online marketing through the terms they use to conduct searches. the language of online marketing is the language of searchers, the language of customers. If a firm highlights its own jargon in its web content, social media conversation and ppc campaigns, it will usually be speaking a foreign language. often a firm’s content creators think that emphasizing popular search terms “dumbs down” their content. But before searchers become interested in how smart you are, they are interested in how relevant you are. In order to be relevant, you must have high visibility for the terms your customers like to use, not the ones you like to use.

If you have read anything about inbound or content marketing you have likely heard the overused phrase “content is king.” While it may be overused, when it comes to inbound marketing, it’s pretty spot on. Content is the meat that will attract your buyers. It is what Google uses to search for keywords and drive users to your site and what buyers use to glean information and knowledge about their problem as they move through the buyer’s journey.

There’s a culture in today’s age of startups that extreme growth is the only marker of a successful business. There’s a lot of pressure when it comes to taking on more clients and you may discover that you can be financially satisfied with a certain number of great clients. You may ultimately decide that rapid expansion is not what’s best for you. Unless you have outside investors breathing down your neck, the ability to live a financially stable (if not better) life on your own terms may be more enticing to you.
As we know from interactions with our own friends, they can be full of surprises. So one of the biggest mistakes you can make when creating a buyer persona is to constantly make assumptions. Actually put these personas to the test, hit the pavement, and start interviewing people and get some real data. After all, there’s that saying about assumptions making a donkey out of you and me.

Equipped with all of this knowledge you will be able to craft an effective positioning statement, USP and brand. Creating a style guide and specs for your marketing and branding to keep everything consistent may be a part of this. It can certainly help to keep a unified image. Just don’t let it slow you down, as things are bound to change as you test, grow and raise money from new investors.

Guest posting for SEO purposes using low-quality content may be dead, but guest posting with high-quality content for the purpose of gaining more exposure with your target audience isn't. With this in mind, you don't want to use keywords for an over-optimized anchor text link in your author bio. Rather, you'll want to use keywords to find the best opportunities for guest posting.
Direct marketing companies help you plan and manage direct mail campaigns. They can provide with you mailing lists that match your target market. They design and write direct mail letters or develop creative mailing items. Hold a social media contest. A great way to get instant likes and shares and build an audience is to give your potential customers a great reason to follow you on social media! A great time to try this is when you are holding a  sale, or before a big event such as the super bowl or local Houston Festivals and even conventions. Ice Nine Online helped a small business finance company engage more customers and improve brand awareness by setting up direct digital marketing strategies that included paid Google search campaigns, PPC and SEO. As a result of its partnership with Ice Nine Online, the finance company's new customer acquisition increased by 50% within the first 6 months.
Email marketing is yet another tactic in your inbound marketing arsenal. Email is used most effectively as a lead nurturing tool, in that it is used to engage with potential customers as they interact with specific content on your website. For example, should a prospect visit your website and download an eBook, they will then begin to receive a set of triggered emails related to the eBook topic, encouraging them to further interact with the brand. Email is also commonly used for announcements, newsletters and promotions. Just as with social media, email frequency and timing matters. While incorporating email into your marketing plan is important, overdoing it can backfire. People don’t want to be overrun with emails and if you are overzealous you could risk losing potential buyers.
After being disappointed with their paid search results, a West Coast public university hired HawkSEM to boost its paid advertising game. The project is ongoing and includes Google AdWords and retargeting campaigns that aim to attract students to programs within the university such as master's or business certificate opportunities. HawkSEM takes a hands-on approach, developing the paid advertising strategy, creating ad copy, managing the university's bids, and tracking progress. The results? Forty-percent more leads at half the cost.
Buyer personas are fictional representations of your ideal customers based on demographic data, online behavior, and your educated speculation about personal histories, motivations, and concerns. For example, you may define one of your personas as VP of Engineering Vince, a business executive who cares most about cost and long-term support. A second persona could be Engineer Elliot, an engineering manager or senior staff engineer who is an expert in your technology area and wants to do a deep dive into the technical capabilities of your product or how you deliver a service. Elliot greatly influences Vince, but Vince makes the final decisions. Vince and Elliot have very different concerns.
As we have already established, the content you create is important to your strategy but it is only useful if it finds its way into the right hands. SEO is what Google and other search engines use to index your pages and allow your content to be found by your prospective customers. In a digital world, SEO is hugely important. You could think about it as another distribution channel with a whole different set of rules.

Without the right keywords, your SEO Marketing Campaign will go the wrong way. This guide to the kinds of keywords you can optimize is aimed to help you determine which keywords you need to include in your SEO marketing campaign to set your SEO plans in the right direction. For the first of this per-lesson tutorial, I’d be tackling Market Defining Keywords.
If you do decide that building an agency is what you want to do, create an LLC or SCorp. This will grant you personal legal security if something goes terribly wrong (lawsuits). It also allows you a multitude of tax benefits. I would suggest getting an LLC or SCorp established as soon as possible as it also legitimizes your business in both the eyes of the client and Uncle Sam.
Standard to any business or marketing plan is the SWOT analysis. The SWOT analysis should help you clearly define your strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats so that you can develop goals and objectives that are on point and tied to your overall mission. The SWOT analysis will also enable you to understand what differentiates you from your competition and how you should position yourself in the market. It will also help in developing your messaging and your unique selling proposition. Brutal honesty is imperative to a truly insightful SWOT. Use bullets and aim for 4–5 in each section. Limiting your lists will help you to focus on the most critical points and help retain focus.

As we mentioned earlier, keyword strategy is not a one-time event; instead, it is an exercise in continuous improvement. while many firms are content with implementing a coherent program, the real winners are the firms that always look for ways to improve. Careful review of site performance, ppc campaigns and social media metrics reveal new keyword opportunities, underperforming pages and hidden gems.
An upscale shopping center and hotel development in San Francisco used Crowd to develop a marketing strategy for leasing units and attracting specific kinds of tenants. The development firm behind the complex employed the whole array of Crowd's services, including web design, physical advertisements and signage, and social media presence. The development has since confirmed several high profile individuals will be bringing restaurants and storefronts to the location when it opens.

The essence of successful marketing is positioning your content to capitalize on the right keywords. one way that firms chase the wrong keywords is failing to understand user intent. for example, consider a popular search term like “video delivery.” With more than 200,000 google searches a month, it would be tempting for a firm that sells video transmission equipment to optimize content around that term and capture more of the online demand. But what are people looking for when they search for video delivery? childbirth delivery? How to download video to a computer? Video transmission equipment? After conducting a google search, it becomes apparent that most searches on this term are related to childbirth. If the firm in question focused on “video delivery,” it would attract the wrong kind of visitors, wasting budget dollars.

Marketing plans and strategies are often used interchangeably. This is because a marketing plan should not exist without the overarching strategy as a framework. In some cases, the strategy and the plan may be incorporated into one document particularly in smaller companies that may only run one or two major campaigns in a year. However, the plan outlines marketing activities on a monthly, quarterly or annual basis. The marketing strategy outlines the overall value proposition.
For most businesses, tens of thousands of search terms are used by people looking for the stuff they sell. understanding your total universe of search terms is fundamental to establishing an appropriate budget. If the widget manufacturer identifies 100,000 relevant search terms, there may be only enough money in the budget to attack 5,000 of them. It therefore becomes critical to know which terms to pursue – and which to ignore.
One of the first questions we receive is how to  assess how much your digital marketing agency is currently worth. There are many ways to measure the value of a digital marketing agency. The simplest and most widely used variant is profit margins. Numbers vary widely both in averages for a digital-only agency as well as the true calculation. For our purposes, we work off of both a multiplier on EBITDA as well as general Net Profit margin. Generally speaking, agency buyers are looking for companies that boast a profit margin of at least 17% but we’ve seen successful acquisitions for much less profitable agencies that boasted IP value, headcount strength, revenue growth or plain geographic diversification. Regardless of if you’re pursuing M&A, if your agency profits reach or exceed that number, then you’re in great shape. If not, there are ways to improve this but don’t be afraid to determine the other methods of evaluation with us or another acquiring group.

If your marketing plan from last year doesn’t really distinguish from this year’s plan, the first option is definitely a possible route. Is this your first year, or is it difficult to compare your new plan with last year’s plan? Go with option two. It’s more effort, but it will ensure that you’re creating a reliable forecast. This projection allows you to calculate a potential ROI, and gives you a reason to pursue your plan.
A marketing plan considers the value proposition of a business and sets out the schedule for a period. Market research is often the basis for the identification of the target audience and the channels to be used, for example, radio, social media, online ads, and regional TV advertising spots.  The marketing plan includes the rationale for decisions and describes the overall marketing strategy. The plan should focus on the creation, timing and placement of specific campaigns and how the outcomes will be measured.
Essentially the Advertising and Promotion section of the marketing plan describes how you're going to deliver your Unique Selling Proposition to your prospective customers. While there are literally thousands of different promotion avenues available to you, what distinguishes a successful plan from an unsuccessful one is the focus - and that's what your Unique Selling Proposition provides.

Unlike any advertising agency, The Marketing Company is a brand-marketing firm whose approach is more like that of a fully-integrated marketing department. This means not only creating and developing marketing messages to be distributed among all selected media and managing those messages, but also making sure that the messages and promises can be delivered. This means working with management and staff to ensure every detail of “the experience” a client or customer may have meets and delivers on any promises made via the creative process.

They also redesigned the client's brief and whitepaper format for their print publications.
If you have become skilled in digital marketing (paid specifically) you can essentially run ads for most businesses. However, you need to learn the target market and how to formulate effective messaging. This can take a lot of time when the business is unfamiliar or abstract to what you are used to working with, which inevitably causes issues early on if things aren’t going so well.

Score each term on relevance to your business. Go through each row of the spreadsheet and score each search term on how relevant to your business it is in a new column called Relevance. I like to use a 1 to 5 scale, with 5 being the most relevant for my business. For example, I would give the term small business internet marketing a score of 5, while just the term marketing would probably get a 3 score, and the terms lead crystal, lead singer and lead acid should all get scored as a 1. These are all related to the word spelled l-e-a-d, but are not related to the word lead as I mean it, which is as a sales or marketing lead. The way I like to think about this is for the people searching on that term you are scoring, how likely is it that they will convert to a customer when they visit your website. A score of 1 means your business is not relevant to the person searching, a score of 5 means it is the perfect business for them.

Thanks for the great article, I am just confused about your "dog training" example. The topics list you suggest does not include any local qualifiers. I think dog training is a mostly local business. If every dog training school in every city writes those kinds of articles there will be quite a few. :-) I am wondering how to take those great topics plus incorporate the location in a meaningfull way. Do you have any ideas for that? Having the best ranking article about puppy training might not give you more more local customers, or did I miss something ?

Google's AdWords Keyword Planner tool is another common starting point for SEO keyword research. It not only suggests keywords and provides estimated search volume, but also predicts the cost of running paid campaigns for these terms. To determine volume for a particular keyword, be sure to set the Match Type to [Exact] and look under Local Monthly Searches. Remember that these represent total searches. Depending on your ranking and click-through rate, the actual number of visitors you achieve for these keywords will usually be much lower.
Once you have your strategy in place its time to decide what tactics are most important to the success of that strategy. For example, a company might decide to focus on four main tactics for the year: blog creation, a website re-vamp, SEO improvement and custom list development for email campaigns. While they may still want to work on their social media strategy and PR, for the year in question, they will devote the majority of their budget towards the four main tactics listed while continuing to allocate smaller budgets towards social media and PR, to keep them running. In addition, tactical calendars will be needed to help lay out the specifics of each tactic. For example, an editorial calendar will be needed for the content blogging strategy.

Second, the term “firm” is more often used to describe a smaller company that specializes in traditional public relations services, so that “PR firm” is an  accepted term for those types of service providers. As a provider of a full range of marketing services, including public relations and media outreach, the use of the term “marketing firm” is too limited for what we do. Marketing firms like ours do so much more than that, we cannot take the chance of being confused for a pure-play PR firm.
Unlike any advertising agency, The Marketing Company is a brand-marketing firm whose approach is more like that of a fully-integrated marketing department. This means not only creating and developing marketing messages to be distributed among all selected media and managing those messages, but also making sure that the messages and promises can be delivered. In the simplest of terms, content marketing keywords are words or phrases that describe what a piece of content is about (as Moz puts it). A few years ago, keywords tended to be short phrases. For instance, keywords such as “haircut Philadelphia” or “cat hair” were an easy and obvious pick for marketers in those niches. But search has evolved, both in terms of how people search and how search engines process and sort information.

"...compare Local Search Masters to the other interactive agencies, and then look at what they’ve done with the success they’ve had with our franchise. You’re going to find that they compare very well in pricing, they’re transparent, and they have great customer service. I highly recommend them to anyone looking for an interactive agency." – Owner, Massage Franchise
If you haven’t received an offer from a suitable buyer yet, you can always reach out to reputable companies that acquire digital marketing agencies. Business brokers can be beneficial here because of their extensive network, but you shouldn’t be afraid to lean on your own professional network to find the right buyer. Try sending out a few emails to trusted contacts that express your interest in selling your company. Last but not least, you have the option of contacting potential buyers directly. Most growing digital marketing agencies and consultancies have an acquisitions page on their site you can use to get in touch with the right people.

Be aware that some of the answers you receive will be based on the kind of marketing effort you are seeking. For example, if you want a marketing consultancy to analyze your plan, they will report back to you at the end of their effort. But if you're hiring a firm to do a digital or telemarketing campaign, the company should report back to you very quickly, and frequently.
Email marketing is yet another tactic in your inbound marketing arsenal.
