The political environment of your business plays an important role in your company’s well-being. For example, an unstable political system could be the cause of changing circumstances, thus a varying purchasing power of consumers. Other variables influenced by the political environment are trade restrictions or the extent to which legislation is passed.
This sounds enticing early on because you want to build trust with a client that you are doing everything in your power to help them be successful. Folks who have failed experiences with agencies often bring up the fact that they were paying all kind of money only to have no results or ROI. A gun-for-hire approach like this can appear truly tantalizing for a client who’s been burned before.

"After my first discussion with Chris, it was clear to me that he and his group possessed the right knowledge, skill sets and vision to help my brand grow its recognition through these mediums... I would recommend Forthea to anyone who is looking to create awareness for their product or service via a package of tools available through the internet. Forthea brings a great energy and certainly fantastic creativity to the table and shows great potential to increase commerce through communication for just about any business platform in any given medium."
While we’re well aware that you could look up the official definition in any number of print or digital reference publications, we thought you might like to hear what it means to us. To best explain what we feel distinguishes (and elevates) a digital agency from other types of marketing and advertising firms, we’ll highlight some of the key differences:

Because someone who is looking for something that specific is probably a much more qualified searcher for your product or service (presuming you're in the blogging space) than someone looking for something really generic. And because long-tail keywords tend to be more specific, it's usually easier to tell what people who search for those keywords are really looking for. Someone searching for the head term "blogging," on the other hand, could be searching it for a whole host of reasons unrelated to your business.
The above performance analyses concentrate on the quantitative measures which are directly related to short-term performance. But there are a number of indirect measures, essentially tracking customer attitudes, which can also indicate the organization's performance in terms of its longer-term marketing strengths and may accordingly be even more important indicators. Some useful measures are:
In 2014, an industrial engineering company hired TopSpot Internet Marketing to improve the quantity and quality of traffic to its website. The project focused on paid search for Google and Bing. TopSpot Internet Marketing developed, executed, and managed all paid search campaigns. The client was impressed with the number of new leads that resulted from the more informed and strategic paid search campaigns.

A local credit union based in Mass. needed to increase traffic to its website to maintain growth. They went to inSegment for a complete digital marketing strategy. inSegment redesigned the credit union's website and continued to manage its web hosting and optimize its search presence. Members and employees of the credit union found the new website more pleasant and easier to use, and their search appearance has grown steadily.
One aspect of strategy which is often overlooked is that of "timing." The timing of each element of the strategy is critical. Taking the right action at the wrong time can sometimes be almost as bad as taking the wrong action at the right time. Timing is, therefore, an essential part of any plan; and should normally appear as a schedule of planned activities. Having completed this crucial stage of the planning process, to re-check the feasibility of objectives and strategies in terms of the market share, sales, costs, profits and so on which these demand in practice. As in the rest of the marketing discipline, employ judgment, experience, market research or anything else which helps for conclusions to be seen from all possible angles.
Marketing has changed more in the past 10 years than it had in the previous 100—launching us out of the age of TV spots and print ads and into the age of websites, online video, social media, and Google. Consumers today are connected to the web 24/7—U.S. adults now spend upwards of 6 hours per day consuming digital media, and that doesn’t count those whose jobs are internet-dependent.

For example, let's say that someone has emailed a couple of different web designers for a project. They put the project on hold for a bit, then decide to pick it up again later on. What will they likely do? They'll search their inbox for the web design quotes they received. If your subject line includes those keywords, your email will make it into the search results.
Once you have your strategy in place its time to decide what tactics are most important to the success of that strategy. For example, a company might decide to focus on four main tactics for the year: blog creation, a website re-vamp, SEO improvement and custom list development for email campaigns. While they may still want to work on their social media strategy and PR, for the year in question, they will devote the majority of their budget towards the four main tactics listed while continuing to allocate smaller budgets towards social media and PR, to keep them running. In addition, tactical calendars will be needed to help lay out the specifics of each tactic. For example, an editorial calendar will be needed for the content blogging strategy.

Understanding the balance of terms that might be a little more difficult due to competition, versus those terms that are a little more realistic, will help you maintain a similar balance that the mix of long-tail and head terms allows. Remember, the goal is to end up with a list of keywords that provide some quick wins but also helps you make progress toward bigger, more challenging SEO goals.

In an earlier example we considered a case where “inexpensive widgets” had 10 times the search volume of “high quality widgets.” Nevertheless, some widget makers would completely ignore the higher volume term in their keyword strategy because they do not want to be perceived as low price or cheap. In many cases this thinking is shortsighted. If a widget maker captures demand (i.e., attracts traffic) for the “inexpensive” keyword, it has captured a lead – one that can be sold on a high quality product. without the traffic, there are no opportunities to upsell.

Understanding which websites already rank for your keyword gives you valuable insight into the competition, and also how hard it will be to rank for the given term. Are there search advertisements running along the top and right-hand side of the organic results? Typically, many search ads means a high-value keyword, and multiple search ads above the organic results often means a highly lucrative and directly conversion-prone keyword.

If you don't know the difference between head terms and long-tail keywords, let me explain. Head terms are keywords phrases that are generally shorter and more generic -- they're typically just one to three words in length, depending on who you talk to. Long-tail keywords, on the other hand, are longer keyword phrases usually containing three or more words.

Your mission statement is the foundation of your marketing plan. Although it may not play a direct role in your marketing activities, the mission statement focuses on your business goals and helps you make sure that your marketing activities support the business's overall objectives. It's an effective tool to refer back to whenever you start to question if you are still on the right track.
Top-level reflection: In the daily hurly-burly of competitive business, it's hard to turn your attention to the big picture, especially those parts that aren't directly related to the daily operations. You need to take time periodically to really think about your business--whether it's providing you and your employees with what you want, whether there aren't some innovative wrinkles you can add, whether you're getting all you can out of your products, your sales staff and your markets. Writing your marketing plan is the best time to do this high-level thinking. Some companies send their top marketing people away to a retreat. Others go to the home of a principal. Some do marketing plan development at a local motel, away from phones and fax machines, so they can devote themselves solely to thinking hard and drawing the most accurate sketches they can of the immediate future of the business.

Keyword strategies involve identifying the right keywords to focus on, and then using those keywords (and variations of them) in your website content, ppc ads, ppc landing pages, and social media content. While many firms falter before they start by forgetting to identify these terms, many more fail even though they have done their keyword due diligence. why? -- because they fall into keyword traps. Here are six of the most common:

Marketing companies can help your business develop a marketing strategy, plan and manage campaigns, or provide specific services, such as telemarketing or market research. You can retain their services for a specific project or hire them on a retainer basis to assist you over a period of time. You can also hire individual consultants or freelancers with specialist marketing skills to plan and manage projects.
A construction company hired Booyah Advertising to create a paid search campaign. After working with a different digital marketing agency, the client realized they needed a company with experience working with a larger business. Booyah Advertising created and executed a simple, paid search campaign at first and later expanded it to include retargeting and optimization. The client was happy with Booyah Advertising’s expertise, and the campaign helped increase the client’s visibility online.

You may be a sales genius and love selling and creating advertising pieces. Though, no matter how good you are, there are many channels and factors to master in this area of business alone. It’s hard to be a true master on top of all these trends and best practices, and run the business and raise funds well too. Your time may be best spent on other higher level tasks. Even in the beginning your time will be better spent simply closing hot leads than on marketing material.
Ogilvy is one of the largest advertising agencies around the world. Started in 1948 by David Ogilvy with no clients and a staff of two, the agency has grown to 450 offices in 169 cities. Ogilvy is part of the WPP Group and provides a comprehensive range of marketing services including: advertising, PR, public affairs, branding, shopper marketing, healthcare communications, and digital marketing. In a direct distribution channel, the product or service goes directly from the manufacturer to the consumer. In a one stage distribution channel, it goes from manufacturer to retailer to consumer. The traditional distribution channel is from manufacturer to wholesaler to retailer to consumer. Outline all the different companies, people and/or technologies that will be involved in the process of getting your product or service to your customer.
A marketing plan supports the business strategy and business objectives. It must also align with the company values. For example, L.L. Bean believes in selling good merchandise at a reasonable profit and treating customers like human beings. If one of the business objectives was to increase profitability by 2%, the marketing strategies put forth in the marketing plan should not recommend significant price hikes or cutting back on customer support.
Your tactics section should include all the actionable steps you plan to take for advertising, public relations, direct mail, trade shows and special promotions. You can use a paper calendar to schedule your tactics or use a contact manager or spreadsheet program--what matters most is that you stick to your schedule and follow through. A plan on paper is only useful if it's put into action.
What’s particularly interesting about the use of the term is that most companies that provide these types of services–including Bluetext–don’t refer to themselves as firms, but rather as agencies. There are several reasons why we prefer the term “agency” over “firm”, none of them scientific or based on a common standard of use. First and foremost, a firm implies a smaller group of specialists that provide a limited range of services, in this case in the marketing field. It can be high-level strategy, but often not wide-spread implementation or execution. In other words, it limits the company in terms of perception about what it looks like and what it does. So for example, a research firm will only provide that type of service, while a communications agency might include research in its full scope of services. In the case of Bluetext, we provide a full-range of marketing and communications services–including high-level strategy–that includes implementation and not just consulting.
For example, Google Trends shows you what search topics are popular right now. If you have an AdWords account, you can use Google’s Keyword Planner tool to learn more about search volume for specific phrases, as well as to generate new keyword phrases. Google also has another tool, Correlate, which lets you look at searches that correspond to real-world events.
"They hit the ground running, learning what our programs are, and fine-tuning the strategy around the keywords in the ad copy. ... Having the same account managers has been tremendously helpful because they know how we are and what our programs are about. They’re constantly refining our strategy and our messaging, and that wouldn’t be possible if we were constantly being shuffled around." – Director of Marketing, Public University

Adobe. Few software companies survived and thrived through Microsoft's (MSFT) predatory onslaught: IBM/Lotus, Oracle (ORCL), Apple, SAP (SAP), and Adobe (ADBE). Somehow, this relatively small company has come up with products that practically every "knowledge worker" needs to use on a daily basis. It should come as no surprise that its current marketing chief, Ann Lewnes, launched Intel's (INTC) vaunted Pentium product brand and managed the "Intel Inside" program. Also, its founders are great guys.
BBDO is the biggest of the three main advertising agencies in Omnicom Group’s portfolio. They are considered the world’s most awarded and effective advertising agency with 15,000 employees in 289 offices across 81 countries. BBDO’s reputation domestically is well documented but their international offices are also strong examples in their local market. The agency’s list of clients include Macy’s, Visa, GE, Mountain Dew, Airbnb, Ebay, Samsung, HP and much much more. Learn more about BBDO here.
I really don’t know if I could take a word out of this mission statement or even replace one word. Of course, knowing the brand’s portfolio and the brand value the group of companies has established over these years does help to make this mission statement a lot more powerful than it would be for another company just starting out. This is due to the brand perception and, well, they have earned it!

As among San Francisco’s leading plastic surgeons, Dr. Dino Elyassnia required a website that would display his commanding authority and expertise while still creating a warm, inviting atmosphere that mirrored his compassionate demeanor. The result was classically minimalist, yet edgy and modern, capturing the sophisticated, discerning clients Dino was seeking.

The downside to this model is that unless you have great insight into the operations end of the client’s business, it’s going to make billing them extremely difficult. For SaaS businesses and companies with complex sales funnels, this pricing model would be a complete nightmare. I would only suggest this model for ecommerce or clients selling things directly. That way you can assess how many sales you have driven and do the math that way. Another downside to this is the fact that it relies heavily on the product being sold. If there is a significant profit margin, then it makes sense. Otherwise you may be giving yourself unnecessary headaches.
Social Diva Media is a boutique agency creates digital campaigns and integrated web strategies. Founded in 2009, Social Diva Media specializes in social media marketing, mobile app marketing, and digital strategy. I was fortunate to start my career on the marketing team at WordStream, where I was able to develop my paid acquisition skills. What might be unclear to those who have never been on a marketing team specifically is how much actually goes into it. Aside from the pressure to produce, you have to learn complex systems, and if the team is small you have to develop a variety of skills to get even the simplest campaigns off the ground.
DigitasLBi was formed in 2013 when Publicis Groupe merged LBi, a marketing technology agency, and Digitas to create a digital agency that blends data with great storytelling. With a strong presence in North America, Europe, Asia and the Middle East, DigitasLBi has produced award winning work for Disney, Playstation, Dunkin’ Donuts, Whirlpool and more. Use the Keyword Planner to flag any terms on your list that have way too little (or way too much) search volume, and don't help you maintain a healthy mix like we talked about above. But before you delete anything, check out their trend history and projections in Google Trends. You can see whether, say, some low-volume terms might actually be something you should invest in now -- and reap the benefits for later.
Knowing your unique selling proposition (USP) and marketing that USP is essential to beating the competition and solidifying your company’s value in the marketplace. Your USP ties in closely with your brand and your content because those are the conduits your USP will be communicated through. And communication is key. Clearly state your USP and do it often, on your website, in your emails, through your ads etc. For tips on formulating your USP read The Ultimate Guide to Finding Your Unique Selling Proposition.
If your agency’s numbers are in the green, you’ve likely received a message or two from interested acquirers. Agency buyers will send out inquiries to see how receptive you are to selling your company and get more specific information to assess its value. If you’re sitting on a list of these potential buyers already, make sure you’ve researched each to ensure they’re legitimate. You’ll want to give short, honest answers to each of the questions they ask so they can give an accurate assessment of your company’s worth. And, of course, don’t discuss any sensitive business information until the potential buyer signs a confidentiality agreement.

Springbox was hired by a legal software developer to do some work on their digital marketing. By analyzing the competition, Springbox looked for areas where the developer could top their competition. They also helped with branding and improved their Google search rankings. Springbox provided the developer with enough help to get the new business off the ground.
Savage Global Marketing worked with a restaurant to increase its digital presence and garner more online traffic. Savage Global Marketing created a new website with updated UI/UX, created a custom menu layout, and produced SEO-optimized content. Through its partnership with Savage Global Marketing, the restaurant has experienced significant growth in online traffic and a surge in its rate of visitor click-through.

It's wonderful to deal with keywords that have 5,000 searches a day, or even 500 searches a day, but in reality, these popular search terms actually make up less than 30% of the searches performed on the web. The remaining 70% lie in what's called the "long tail" of search. The long tail contains hundreds of millions of unique searches that might be conducted a few times in any given day, but, when taken together, comprise the majority of the world's search volume.

Thanks Asim! I know agencies still list themselves on local directories even though they are providing services nationwide or globally. So even if you don't have a physical store or place that customers go, that can still be listed to get those directory listings. If you have no address at all, it would be better to focus on niche-specific directories as opposed to local directories. But I'd only go for those that appear in search results for keywords that you are targeting or ones that are linked to reputable organizations in your industry.
Create keywords that combine branded and non-branded terms. Branded terms make great keywords not only because they make it easy to create ads and landing pages, but also because they signify high levels of intent. That’s just it, though: bidding exclusively on branded terms means you’re only advertising to searchers who already know who you are. Combining branded terms with non-branded ones expands the reach of your ads while boosting your Quality Scores.
Another aspect to managing clients as a side gig is that it allows you to become experienced in building contracts. You’ll have to become accustomed to the process of putting a proposal together, then a contract, and then sign the necessary documentation (NDA’s etc). It’s a part of the game that you’ll want to streamline so that the time spent on onboarding new clients is reduced.
Toyota. By launching the Lexus brand, beating Mercedes and BMW at their own game, bringing "ergonomics" into our vocabulary, marketing "quiet," and making the dealership experience something more pleasurable than getting a root canal, Toyota (TM) became a great marketing company. It also popularized the luxury crossover SUV (Lexus RX), took the world by storm with the Prius hybrid, and aggressively integrated hybrid technology into many of its vehicles. The company that began life as Toyoda Automatic Loom Works in 1926 became the world's top automobile maker in 2010.
This will help you brand yourself or your business by what you want to be known for. When people ask who you are or what your business does, you'll have a consistent answer, eliminating any confusion. You don't want to be the subject of conversations where one person believes you're a web designer, while another thinks you're an SEO consultant. Regardless of what's true, both people will end up confused as to whether they're discussing the same person.

Changes in the environment mean that the forecasts often have to be changed. Along with these, the related plans may well also need to be changed. Continuous monitoring of performance, against predetermined targets, represents a most important aspect of this. However, perhaps even more important is the enforced discipline of a regular formal review. Again, as with forecasts, in many cases the best (most realistic) planning cycle will revolve around a quarterly review. Best of all, at least in terms of the quantifiable aspects of the plans, if not the wealth of backing detail, is probably a quarterly rolling review — planning one full year ahead each new quarter. Of course, this does absorb more planning resource; but it also ensures that the plans embody the latest information, and — with attention focused on them so regularly — forces both the plans and their implementation to be realistic.
