There can be considerable benefit in comparing these figures with those achieved by other organizations (especially those in the same industry); using, for instance, the figures which can be obtained (in the UK) from `The Centre for Interfirm Comparison'. The most sophisticated use of this approach, however, is typically by those making use of PIMS (Profit Impact of Management Strategies), initiated by the General Electric Company and then developed by Harvard Business School, but now run by the Strategic Planning Institute.
The term ‘digital agency’ is no longer a new or mysterious phrase. Instead, it has become more of a buzzword that is overused and often misused. Though the phrase may seem quite uncomplicated, it’s the ambiguity of it that can sometimes be confusing. CommonPlaces has always considered itself a digital agency, but in a time where everyone and anyone can say they are a “digital agency”, we understand the importance of clarifying exactly what that means for our audience.

Invest in remarketing efforts. Otherwise, you’re putting all your eggs (money) in one basket (ad). Look – as good as your social ads may be, the chances that a prospect is going to immediately click and convert the first time they see you in their feed is pretty, pretty, pretty low. Remarketing is a no-brainer tactic to increase the chances of turning a prospect into a customer.
Second, the term “firm” is more often used to describe a smaller company that specializes in traditional public relations services, so that “PR firm” is an  accepted term for those types of service providers. As a provider of a full range of marketing services, including public relations and media outreach, the use of the term “marketing firm” is too limited for what we do. Marketing firms like ours do so much more than that, we cannot take the chance of being confused for a pure-play PR firm.
Changes in the environment mean that the forecasts often have to be changed. Along with these, the related plans may well also need to be changed. Continuous monitoring of performance, against predetermined targets, represents a most important aspect of this. However, perhaps even more important is the enforced discipline of a regular formal review. Again, as with forecasts, in many cases the best (most realistic) planning cycle will revolve around a quarterly review. Best of all, at least in terms of the quantifiable aspects of the plans, if not the wealth of backing detail, is probably a quarterly rolling review — planning one full year ahead each new quarter. Of course, this does absorb more planning resource; but it also ensures that the plans embody the latest information, and — with attention focused on them so regularly — forces both the plans and their implementation to be realistic.

Marketers have a saying: “If you don’t know where you’re going, any road will take you there.” Without planning and a sound strategy, how can you know where you are going or what you need to do to get there? Here are five steps to develop your marketing plan. For a more detailed reference, check out our ebook, Preparing Your 12-Month Marketing Plan.
An insurance and financial services company hired Rise Interactive to help attract new customers. The insurance company worked with a traditional marketing agency previously but was unhappy with the results. Rise Interactive created a paid search campaign and tracked progress for the insurance company. These efforts improved the insurance company's bidding process for paid search campaigns to ensure that results were getting better commensurate with budget increases.
It's wonderful to deal with keywords that have 5,000 searches a day, or even 500 searches a day, but in reality, these popular search terms actually make up less than 30% of the searches performed on the web. The remaining 70% lie in what's called the "long tail" of search. The long tail contains hundreds of millions of unique searches that might be conducted a few times in any given day, but, when taken together, comprise the majority of the world's search volume.
Are you a marketer or a marketing agency? Are you looking for the right combination of marketing keywords to reach out to your target audience? Are you on the lookout for some wonderful ideas for your blog articles? You might remember a time when keywords seemed to be the end-all, be-all of content. Writers and editors would twist themselves into knots trying to get the right keyword in a blog post the right number of times. These days, the focus is more on the reader and less on keyword stuffing. BUT, content marketing keywords still matter. Here’s how and why you can use them to take your content marketing to the next level.
In terms of measurement, I recommend a marketing dashboard featuring the most important metrics that define marketing success for you. These metrics will likely come from multiple areas, including your funnel metrics (leads, opportunities, etc) and your campaign KPIs, and will indicate whether you are on track to achieve the marketing goals and objectives you defined in your strategy. Just as a car dashboard has indicator lights for low fuel or high speed, the metrics you include in your marketing dashboard should serve as these indicator lights, or warning signals, for marketing success. For your marketing dashboard, select these key metrics and add the monthly objective for each. Then, each month, add the actual results for each metric and consider an easy “indicator light” system such as highlighting each metric result red, yellow, or green based on whether they are below target, on target, or above target.

There is a wide variety of ways to get your marketing message in front of your prospects, more than ever, in fact. You can go the traditional advertising route and stick ads in newspapers and on billboards, or you can try more modern and ever-evolving tactics like SEO and content marketing. Whatever route you head down, you need to figure out what channels you’ll be using in order to turn your audience into prospects and then into customers.
When it comes to brainstorming, sit down with your team and think about phrases and words relevant to your brand. You can think of this as brainstorming ideas for content topics, as it’s very similar. For example, if you are creating content for a company that produces vacuums specifically designed for pet hair removal, your list of keywords and topics might look like this:
All of this advice stems from starting an agency by yourself. If you have a partner or two that want to do it with you, then it changes things quite a bit. With that being said, the profits are going to be split and you’re going to have to either charge higher rates or take on more clients to make it mutually beneficial to the point where it’s better than having a normal day job. Just something to keep in mind.
For example, assume your search ad generated 5,000 impressions in one day, of which 100 visitors have come to your site, and three have converted for a total profit (not revenue!) of $300. In this case, a single visitor for that keyword is worth $3 to your business. Those 5,000 impressions in 24 hours could generate a click-through rate of between 18-36% with a #1 ranking (see the Slingshot SEO study for more on potential click-through rates), which would mean 900-1800 visits per day, at $3 each, or between 1 and 2 million dollars per year. No wonder businesses love search marketing!

Mass media was hot on the telephone’s tail, of course. Print, radio, and television enabled (and continue to enable) advertisers to communicate their messages to millions of eyeballs and eardrums at any given time. What’s more, with the rise of mass media emerged the capacity for cross-channel marketing: the advertisement of the same brand or product across different media outlets. That’s more exposure to more consumers who are more likely to convert and spend their money.
At the top end you have your cold leads, people who are completely unaware of your brand’s existence, and you want to figure out how to grab their awareness and interest. Once you do, you’ll need to figure out a way to turn them into hot leads by generating a sense of desire. And finally, you’ll capitalize on that desire by asking them to perform a specific action, whether it’s subscribing to your email list or purchasing a product.

Firms often grow complacent because they get lots of traffic from branded keywords such as “acme widget company.” However, branded keyword traffic is a given; google and other search engines will almost always give high rankings to company web pages when a company’s name is part of the search term. What really counts is how much traffic is generated from non-branded keywords — search terms people use when they’re looking for your stuff, but don’t know who you are, or don’t know you sell it. Increasing your share of non-branded keywords is the way to outperform the competition.

Use your marketing keywords in all your marketing communications, including resumes, CVs, cover letter, interview follow-up letters, executive profiles and more. Carefully integrate them into the text, when and where appropriate. Be sure you are communicating a complete message of who you are and what value and knowledge you bring to the organization.

Set your pricing by examining how much it cost you to produce the product or service and adding a fair price for the benefits that the customer will enjoy. Examining what others are charging for similar products or services will guide you when you're figuring out what a fair price for such benefits would be. You may find it useful to conduct a Breakeven Analysis.
COMMENTARY Marketing is like sex -- everyone thinks they're good at it. In reality, of course, very few really get it. So few, indeed, that I had to struggle to come up with 10 companies that really know what they're doing and deliver the goods, year in, year out. Oddly, coming up with 10 companies with insanely bad marketing was far easier. Go figure.
Southwest Airlines. By focusing on the customer, doing things the right way instead of the way they've traditionally been done, allowing its staff to have a little fun on the job, flying short-haul routes to regional airports, and becoming the first no-frills carrier, Herb Kelleher broke the airline industry mold and made deregulated air travel profitable. Southwest (LUV) broke the mold. And not only that, but hey, Bags Fly Free.
If an existing keyword strategy is a year or two old or nonexistent, doing random tweaks will be like rearranging deck chairs on the titanic. A more sounder approach is to conduct new keyword analysis annually to identify current online demand, and use that analysis as a framework for implementing tactical adjustments and/or large-scale content revisions.
If you haven’t received an offer from a suitable buyer yet, you can always reach out to reputable companies that acquire digital marketing agencies. Business brokers can be beneficial here because of their extensive network, but you shouldn’t be afraid to lean on your own professional network to find the right buyer. Try sending out a few emails to trusted contacts that express your interest in selling your company. Last but not least, you have the option of contacting potential buyers directly. Most growing digital marketing agencies and consultancies have an acquisitions page on their site you can use to get in touch with the right people.
Socialfly helped a gardening company increase user engagement by creating a customized marketing program focused on Facebook, Instagram, and paid advertisements. Socialfly found the best-fit influencers on both Facebook and Instagram to help the gardening company boost its presence online. They reported an increase in engagement and responses to social media posts.
In Keyword Planner, formerly known as the Keyword Tool, you can get search volume and traffic estimates for keywords you're considering. Unfortunately, when Google transitioned from Keyword Tool to Keyword Planner, they stripped out a lot of the more interesting functionality. But you can make up for it a bit if you take the information you learn from Keyword Planner and use Google Trends to fill in some blanks.
The landscape of global agencies has become crowded and confusing over the last 10 years. While huge agency networks and holding companies are the vanguard, there has been a convergence of consulting firms and tech giants entering the frame to compete as well as in-house agencies. All of this continues to blur the line between what is considered an agency and who is best suited to help your global marketing, advertising, and digital initiatives.
Marketing Maven worked with a Los Angeles-based production company to elevate its social media presence on Facebook, Instagram, and Pinterest. Marketing Maven designed social media ads and shared relevant content to increase the production company's followers and engagement across all three social channels. After about 12 months, the production company had 17,000 followers on Facebook and its Instagram ads garnered 1.5 million impressions.

Instagram is the new, up-and-coming Facebook. Remember to grow your account organically and not buy followers. Create original content, consider video content, interact with users. One of my tried-and-tested practices on Instagram is to like your followers and other users’ photos. Always follow users back because the algorithm rewards you for staying active. Shedding users regularly might not be too helpful.

When you tell people that you’re going to run your own agency or consultancy, it carves into their mind that you are going to rent out an office space and hire a bunch of employees. More often than not, that is the worst decision you can make. If you’re like 99% of the population, chances are you have bills that need to be paid. If you want to get started and grow, you are going to have to make sure you can personally survive first.

While we’re here, let me elaborate a bit on SEO. When executed consistently and appropriately, SEO practices improve the SERP rankings of your website; if you conduct rigorous keyword research and publish great content that is relevant to whatever keywords people are searching, your website will perform better in the organic results. As Google continues to tweak the algorithms that determine the relative importance of different ranking criteria, SEO best practices change, too. Stay up to date with the WordStream blog to learn how you can maintain high organic traffic.

After both parties have agreed on the same number and general selling terms, you and the buyer will jump into the specifics of the sale. This process will vary from buyer to buyer, but it will involve discussing your payment options and how you should address the transition for employees and clients. At the end of this step, you and the buyer will collaborate to create a legal document—usually called a “term sheet”—that communicates the full details of the sale. Once both parties sign off on this document, the sale is officially complete. Congrats!

One aspect of strategy which is often overlooked is that of "timing." The timing of each element of the strategy is critical. Taking the right action at the wrong time can sometimes be almost as bad as taking the wrong action at the right time. Timing is, therefore, an essential part of any plan; and should normally appear as a schedule of planned activities. Having completed this crucial stage of the planning process, to re-check the feasibility of objectives and strategies in terms of the market share, sales, costs, profits and so on which these demand in practice. As in the rest of the marketing discipline, employ judgment, experience, market research or anything else which helps for conclusions to be seen from all possible angles.
